Academic Discussion on the Development of Psychometric Test Instruments
Primary tabs

“A psychometric test is a structured technique designed to produce carefully selected samples of behavior, enabling us to conclude students’ performance based on test results,” opened Assoc. Prof. Tajularipin Sulaiman from the Faculty of Educational Studies, Universiti Putra Malaysia, during an Academic Discussion titled “Revolves Around Developing of Psychometric Test Instrument.”
The event, organized by the Doctoral Program in Educational Research and Evaluation (S3 PEP) of the Graduate School of Yogyakarta State University (SPs UNY), featured insightful discussions on the importance and application of psychometric testing. Tajularipin explained that psychometric tests are tools designed to objectively measure an individual’s potential and abilities for specific tasks or roles. Such tests are widely used as part of recruitment strategies due to their broad coverage, assessing various aspects such as cognitive ability, knowledge, and personality traits.
He further noted that psychometric testing is highly relevant in the field of education, as it helps students gain a better understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, while also assessing their skills and cognitive capabilities through structured testing instruments.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wan Marzuki Bin Wan Jaafar added that success in student selection processes is crucial for educational institutions. Effective recruitment ensures the placement of high-quality talent in the right positions. However, he pointed out that finding candidates who align with institutional expectations is not always easy, as factors such as bias, inaccuracy, and subjectivity often affect assessment outcomes.
He emphasized that in schools, not only physical abilities but also non-physical aspects—such as determination, emotions, attitude, motivation, and self-confidence—play essential roles in student achievement. “Emotional aspects must be carefully considered, as emotional stability or instability can greatly influence students’ performance in examinations. When emotionally stable, students are more likely to perform well in performance-based assessments,” concluded Wan Marzuki, wrapping up the academic discussion.
